Responsible Innovation & Impact Report 2023
PANGAIA LAB
Innovative Products
PANGAIA LAB is the primary vehicle by which we introduce responsible innovation to the industry. We are proud to showcase 4 launches in 2023.
The Renu Jacket, powered by Evrnu. The Rewild Body Block, a collaboration by C16 Biosciences and Haeckels, introducing the first soap made with Palmless™ Torula Oil—a lab-grown alternative to palm oil. The Absolute Sneaker, powered by Zellerfeld. The Air Gilet, powered by Natural Fiber Welding.
The Materials We Used
Our Material Overview
At PANGAIA we continually measure our material usage across our entire product range to discourage the use of ubiquitous ‘drop-out’ materials and transition towards biocompatible ‘champion’ alternatives.
In 2023, 8% of our material footprint was made up from ‘Champion’ and ‘Runner up’ materials, signalling good progress, but also highlighting the scope for further improvement. In 2023, 84% of our products sold were covered by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
The After Life
How We’re Considering End-of-Use
At PANGAIA we're aiming to create a more circular business, with consideration for what happens to our products at the end of their usable life.
Through our internal analysis, we found that 85% of products we sold in 2023 are readily recyclable, given the existing recycling infrastructure. Going forward, we’re looking to consider how principles of biocompatibility can affect the end-of-life of our products.
ReWear your PANGAIA
Our First Step into a More Circular Future
As part of our commitment to accelerating the transition to a more circular future, we are creating the systems to allow our products to stay in circulation for longer.
In 2023, we launched PANGAIA ReWear - our first peer-to-peer resale platform. The launch was the first-of-its-kind, thanks to the Instant Resale™ integration with EON—leveraging the power of Digital Product Passports.
The Call to Climate Action
Our Commitment to Decarbonisation
Analysing our environmental impact and aligning with the most ambitious, Science Based Targets, is what guides us to action.
In 2023, we have reduced our carbon footprint by 40% from our 2021 baseline. This is significant progress, however the challenge will be to maintain this as our business grows. Our Emissions Intensity also reduced by ~9% from 2022 to 2023.
Acting Ethically and Responsibly
Our Commitment to the People in our Supply Chain
At PANGAIA, we are deeply committed to human rights and the welfare of people in our supply chain. Enabling decent work, uplifting people and respecting essential rights is the cornerstone of our programmes of work.
In 2023, we extended our efforts on building a Ethical and Responsible Business by joining the Fair Wear Foundation, onboarding a digital supply chain traceability tool Retraced, and strengthening our supply chain partnerships.
The Team
Our PANGAIA Employees
At PANGAIA, we are a global collective of individuals bound by a common desire to use business as a force for good.
In 2023, we extended our efforts to ensure Fair Pay & Treatment, Amplifying Voices through increased employee surveying and provided more Learning & Development opportunities.
Philanthropy at our Core
How We're Giving Back to Communities & Nature
At PANGAIA we aspire to give back more than we take. Our giving-back initiatives focus on climate action, humanitarian relief and supporting equity.
In 2023, we gave to 5 key funds and organisations: Tomorrow Tree Fund, Bee The Change Fund, Ocean Fund with Coral Gardeners, Humanitarian Fund with Choose Love and Product donations with SmartWorks & In Kind Direct.
